In one of the strangest seasons in college football history, we ended up with Alabama and Nick Saban dominating the college football landscape once again. After Ohio State's strong performance against Clemson, many expected a tight, but high scoring affair between the Crimson Tide and the Buckeyes. For the first 25 minutes, both teams went back and forth, with it being a 21-17 game with five minutes left in the first half. Heisman winner Devonta Smith then quickly added two touchdowns at the end of the first half to make it 35-17 and Alabama never looked back. Smith had a tremendous game catching 12 passes for 215 yards and 3 touchdowns, while his quarterback threw for 464 yards and 5 touchdowns.
Many doubted the ability of Alabama's defense to contain the Ohio State offense which had shredded Clemson 10 days prior. However, an injury to Trey Sermon early in the game seriously hampered the Buckeye's rushing attack. Justin Fields was unremarkable as well, throwing for under 200 yards on the game albeit with no turnovers. Simply put this was a much improved Alabama defense from the one we saw at the beginning of the year, especially in the second half of this football game.
Frankly speaking, the 2020 Alabama football team stands out with some of the greatest college football teams of all time. Imagine this offense going up against the 2001 Miami Hurricanes defense, or what kind of shootout we would have gotten to witness if this Alabama team had played last year's LSU Tigers. With last night's win, Alabama captured its third College Football Playoff Title and 16th national title. Head Coach Nick Saban claimed his 7th title last night as a head coach, and this years' title being his 6th at Alabama.
